BRIDGEPORT - The Bridge Academy is starting a journalism program under the advisment of Bob Phillips, a teacher at The Bridge Academy and veteran journalist. Phillips has been an editorial assistant at Newsweek, a writer for Inside Sports magazine, a managing editor at Scholastic, Inc., and a copy editor at the New York Daily News and the New Haven Register. In addition, he spent 10 years as editor-in-chief and associate publisher at VNU Business Media, now part of the Nielsen Company. He is currently a contributor to the Connecticut Post, where he covers high school football, and at Examiner.com, where he covers UConn sports as well as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Bridgeport Bluefish. A certified English/Language Arts teacher, Phillips is currently employed at The Bridge Academy middle school. An organizational meeting was held at The Bridge Academy on Dec. 8 for all students wishing to participate in The Panther Press. While several students attended the first meeting, according to Phillips there are many opportunities still available for students interested in journalism including contributing writers, photographers, and editorial staff. Experience in journalism assists in developing writing skills, impressing college admissions staff, and raising awareness about the fine students of The Bridge Academy. Meetings will be held after school on most Wednesdays and will last for approximately one-half hour. Any students interested in writing for The Panther Press should contact Mr. Phillips.
